The research regarding those environmental factors is consistent. The neurological data is less certain than common descriptions claim. In a study from June 2026 in NeuroImage, researchers record 64-channel EEG while participants play video games in states of flow, boredom and anxiety. The results indicate that flow is not defined by a single frequency band. It is the state with the highest connectivity, the highest metastability and the highest dimensionality among the three measured conditions.
The causes of the flow state
The condition that leads to flow most reliably is the balance between challenge and skill. A task that is easier than your ability causes boredom, while a task that is much harder than your ability causes anxiety.
