The idea, briefly

What is NSDR?

NSDR, short for non-sleep deep rest, is a name popularised by Andrew Huberman for practices such as yoga nidra and guided body scans: you lie still and let the body rest deeply while the mind stays awake. The research is still early. One PET study found increased dopamine release during yoga nidra (Kjaer et al., 2002).

Short naps are better studied. In NASA's pilot study, a planned nap of about 26 minutes improved alertness and performance (Rosekind et al., 1995), and a sleep-lab study found that a 10-minute nap gave the best balance of alertness and grogginess (Brooks & Lack, 2006). Power nap covers that range, 10 to 25 minutes.

What sets these sessions apart is the way back. Nap music slows you down and stops there. Power nap and Body at rest slow the pulse from alpha into theta, hold it there for the rest itself, then climb back up, the tone brightening as they go. And when the day is over, Nightfall takes you all the way down into sleep.

  1. Power nap

Down into theta, back up into beta

    You wake up alert

  2. Body at rest

Down into theta, back to alpha

    Rested, but awake

  3. Nightfall

    Down through theta into delta

    Toward sleep

Questions

What's in Deep Rest?
3 Mental 6-packs, 18 sessions in all: Power nap, Body at rest and Nightfall. Power nap and Body at rest are guided programmes.
Do I need Premium?
Premium is the simplest way: one subscription installs all the packs at once and also unlocks every other paid pack. Each pack is also sold on its own in the Session library, if you'd rather buy one and keep it.
Do I need the app?
Installed packs play here in your browser as audio. The full experience, with light synchronised to the sound, is in the free 6th Mind app for iPhone and Android.
Do I need headphones?
No. Headphones add binaural beats; without them, isochronic tones carry the same rhythm through any speaker, and the light works either way.
Will I wake up groggy?
Power nap is built to avoid it. Each session stops in theta, short of the deep delta sleep that leaves you foggy, then the pulse and the tone rise back up and the voice tells you it's time to come back. Body at rest returns you to a calm, awake alpha. Nightfall is different: it's for bedtime, goes on down toward sleep and doesn't bring you back up, so it isn't one for the afternoon.
How long are the sessions?
Power nap sessions run 10 to 25 minutes and Body at rest sessions 15 to 25, one length each. Nightfall's sessions are 11 minutes, or 6 in the short version.
Which app version do I need?
Power nap and Body at rest need 6th Mind 2.0.5 or later, the first version that plays these longer, single-length sessions. If yours is older, update it from the App Store or Google Play. Nightfall plays on any version.
Is the light safe?
For most people, yes. The exception is photosensitive epilepsy: if you have a history of seizures, switch the light off and use sound only. Keep the brightness comfortable, and never play a session while driving.
Can I cancel Premium?
Yes, anytime in the 6th Mind app (My Profile). Your access lasts until the end of the period you've paid for. Premium is $5.99 a month or $39.99 a year.
